Basketball season for Horizon Honors Middle School kicked off on Wednesday, Mar. 4, at 5 p.m. for the boys’ A team. They found a tough opponent in Rancho Solano, and played well, but it was not quite enough as they came out on the losing end. The team did a great job and never quit until the game was over. They overcame adversity and were able to narrow the score in the second half.

The first half began with momentum for Horizon Honors, as eighth grader Stephen McCollum immediately got a steal and took the ball down the court, making a layup. However, although the game was tied at 10 to 10 halfway through the first half, Rancho Solano got going. The boys began to counter at the end of the half, but ended up trailing 14 to 30 before the second half.

The team realized that they had to put points on the board and play better defense in the second half, and that’s exactly what they did. Horizon Honors controlled the paint on offense for a nice stretch, and eighth grader Mason Harbertson was able to make multiple shots in the paint. The score narrowed to only a ten point lead for Rancho Solano. Horizon Honors was only down by six points at one time in the second half. However, Rancho Solano gained steam at the right time near the end and was able to close out the game with a score of 42 to 51.

It was a hard-fought and well-played game, even though the team couldn’t quite come out with a victory. It is still very early in the season, and the team will look to get their first win in their upcoming game against Bethany Christian on Thursday, Mar. 5, at 5 p.m.
