After a 6-2 victory at Gila Bend on Feb. 29, the Horizon Honors baseball team looked to improve their record to 2-0 and won 9-1 against Coronado. Not only did the team win by 8 runs, but seniors Connor Sorrells and Joseph Holguin pitched for a combined no-hitter with 13 strikeouts in total.
The Eagles started off the game behind 1-0, after Coronado was able to score what would be their only run. Horizon Honors answered right back with four runs of their own, thanks to timely hitting and mistakes made by Coronado.
After a scoreless second inning, the Eagles tacked on another run in the third, as Sorrells continued to retire batter after batter. Horizon Honors scored once more in the fifth inning, making the score 6-1 in their favor.
Coronado threatened to score in the sixth inning, as they had the bases loaded with no outs. However, Sorrells proceeded to strike out the side and leave all three baserunners stranded. The Eagles didn’t let up and added on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
With a secure 9-1 lead, senior Joseph Holguin went in to pitch for Sorrells and close out the game. Holguin did just that, striking out the side in order and securing the Eagles’ second victory of the season. Holguin and Sorrells held Coronado hitless throughout the entire game, an impressive feat.
This win improves Horizon Honors to 2-0 on the season. For Coronado, they are still searching for a victory, as the latest loss puts them at 0-7. Be sure to support your Eagles as they prepare for the Phoenix Country Day School (PCDS) Desert Classic tournament, where they’ll face off against Pusch Ridge on Friday, March 3, at 9 a.m. to open the four-game tournament at Valley Christian High School.
