Horizon Honors’ spring musical, “The Pajama Game,” is coming up and audition season is here. Whether you’re good at acting, or good with technology, or if you just want to take a chance, auditioning is a great opportunity.

Have you ever wondered what the audition process is like? First, you have to go to the media center to pick up the audition packet. Before picking up a packet, you need to decide whether you want to be a part of tech crew or an actor. This is crucial, because if you want to be part of tech crew, all you need is the green sheet and to follow its instructions. If you’re an actor, you need the green sheet and the white packet that has parts of the script and the songs.

Whether you’re an actor or a techie, you have to fill out the green form. The green form includes basic information, role-selection, several questions, and rehearsal days you might not be able to show up. The basic information includes: first and last name, grade, your block one and five teachers, a phone number, and an email. After that, you have to decide on your role in the show. Options include: student director, vocal captain, dance captain, rehearsal pianist, stage manager, tech crew, and actor. Whatever you decide, you have to pick what you want to do in that role. For example, if you want to be an actor, you need to choose a role and a vocal range, but if you want to be tech crew, you need to decide if you want to do sound, lights, or something else. Then you have to answer a question about if you don’t mind being moved around, even though you might not have auditioned for something. After that, you need to mark on the green sheet that you have at least a ‘C’ in all of your classes, or if you have a grade below. The last thing you need to do is decide on the back of the sheet if you will be missing any of the practice days.

Later, there will be audition dates where you will drop of your green sheet and audition for your part. If you’re auditioning for tech, all you need to do is drop off the green sheet to whoever is collecting them on Monday, the first day of auditions. For each acting role, there is a certain day(s) on which you need to audition. Depending on the character you choose, you need to know songs or lines or both for the auditions. The white packet you picked up will have everything you need to know for every character. For example, if you wanted a medium part, you have a variety to choose from, such as Hasler, Charley, Joe, Gus, etc. Next to the characters’ names and descriptions there will be a date telling you when to audition and the pages you need to read and sing from in front of the casting directors. So, if you’re going out for Joe, you need to show up on Tuesday, recite your lines on pages 1-3 and 75, and sing “Once-A-Year Day” and “Seven-And-A-Half Cents.”

After you audition the casting directors will put up the list of people who made it in the show outside the media center. Usually they will have it up the day after auditions. Everyone who tries out for the shows always gets nervous about if they made it or not. If you made it, great, if you didn’t, go ask the casting directors what you can do better for the next show.
