A 1.7 mile long asteroid is set to pass by Earth on May 31, 2013 at 1:59pm pacific daylight time (PDT). The asteroid has been named Asteroid 1998 QE2 and the surface of the large space rock is covered in a black sticky substance said to be similar to what is left over in a barbeque, much like charcoal. However, it still remains a great mystery to scientists, who hope to learn more about the asteroid when it passes, for it will be one of the closests asteroids to pass by in recent years. Scientists also hope to learn where the asteroid originated from after its discovery over 15 years ago. The black surface gives indication that is could be an asteroid that passed too close to the sun, or that is escaped the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
