The Maid Rite sandwich, a highly popular meal in the Midwest, is something I have grown up eating for many years. The sandwich is similar to a sloppy joe, but the Maid Rite uses special seasonings as opposed to barbecue sauce. It is a delicious and simple food to make and is perfect for any occasion, so it works very well for picnics or whenever you have guests over.

Inspired by the original Maid Rite, here are the ingredients to make this sandwich:

1 cup warm water

1 tablespoon dried minced onion

1 teaspoon low sodium beef base (or a bouillon cube)

1 teaspoon low sodium chicken base (or a bouillon cube)

2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon low sodium soy sauce

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

3 pounds lean ground beef, uncooked

hamburger buns (however many you need)

toppings (optional): ketchup, mustard, cheese, pickles (ketchup is traditionally not used)

Now, follow this slow cooker recipe to make your Maid Rite.

Set slow cooker to high.  Add all ingredients (except beef).  Stir to combine. Add beef and stir until all combined and beef is completely coated.

Cover and cook for one hour.  Stir occasionally to break up ground beef.  Uncover after one hour of cook time.  Continue cooking on high for 2 ½ to three hours (with the lid off), until most of the liquid has cooked off.  Continue to stir occasionally and break up any chunks of beef.

Using a slotted spoon, serve a large spoonful on a warm bun and add your favorite toppings to the sandwich. Enjoy!

These tasty sandwiches were easy to make and very satisfying. You can’t go wrong with Maid Rites!
