One Saturday afternoon over spring break, after spending the entire morning at baseball practice, my family and I decided to go to a restaurant instead of eating at home. We ended up finding a restaurant featured on the popular Food Network show, Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives in 2009, Sal’s Gilbert Pizza. Sal’s is located in the Gilbert Town Square on South Gilbert Road. It may be a little far, but the food was delicious, and it ended up being a pleasurable experience for my family and I.

We were able to be seated quickly, despite the place being small and somewhat busy, which was a plus. Our drinks were self-serve, making things go quicker as well. Instead of waiting for a waiter to give your order to, go up to the counter and place it yourself. We decided to order a sausage pizza and some calamari, which ended up being a wise choice.

The calamari arrived first and had good flavor, although a few of the tentacles were a bit too tough. The portion size was about what you would expect. The sausage pizza, one of their specialties, ended up being a very delicious thin-crust pizza that gave you a taste of Chicago. We still even had some left to take home, which was even better.

Overall, Sal’s Gilbert Pizza provided both a satisfying dining experience and some tasty food, with good service. It is a bit out there in terms of location, but it is a great place to go if you are in the area. I would definitely recommend Sal’s to a friend or to anyone who likes good traditional Italian food.
