Aaron Rodgers has spent 17 years in the NFL playing for the Green Bay Packers, but during this offseason he was traded to the New York Jets with hopes of leading them to the playoffs. Unfortunately, while playing the Buffalo Bills last weekend, Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon after playing just four snaps. He said that it was “one of the toughest 24 hour stretches I’ve had in my life”. Many say it is a season-ending injury, but Rodgers and the Jets hope he returns by playoff time, as reported on ESPN, especially since the Jets have not made the playoffs since 2010 or had a winning season since 2015. His trade was envisioned to end New York’s playoff drought and to put the Jets’ offense on par with their defense, which is number three in the NFL. Now all the responsibility will rest on the shoulders of Zach Wilson, the number two overall draft pick in the 2021 draft. Over the last two seasons, Wilson has a 8-14 record as a starter. New York Jets coach Robert Saleh says that anyone who thinks their playoff hopes are over will be proved wrong. Saleh also says that the Jets will not be bringing in a new quarterback and that “It’s Wilson’s team”. While Rodgers is facing months of intense rehab, Wilson now has a chance to prove himself.
The team and the fans are still hopeful for a playoff run and a Rodgers return, but there are many who wonder if Wilson can get the job done, and if Rodgers will ever play again.
