Microsoft is known to be one of the best cloud service providers for many applications and has been one of the top picks for internet service providers. Although quite recently, Microsoft has been going through hard times. They have been dealing with multiple disruptions that have affected many users globally.
According to CRN, the problems began in North America at the beginning of the year. Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 suffered a five-six hour service outage. That was followed by a global service outage on Jan. 25 for Azure, Teams, Outlook, and other services. Many users are having a hard time gaining access to their applications, as mentioned above, including their own online mailboxes. According to CNBC, Microsoft is currently searching for the issue and may have found the potential problem. After searching through all of their applications and checking their software, Microsoft found that there was a connection problem within Microsoft WAN that was occurring with multiple devices, according to Reuters. This impacted the connection for clients on Azure, as well as the connections towards the data centers. As a solution to this problem, Microsoft rolled back a network change that the company thought was the potential problem.
During this huge event, Downdetector, a site that keeps track of the data outages by collating status reports from various sources including users, found that thousands of users were having trouble connecting to their applications, mailboxes, and online meetings across the globe. According to CRN, these incidents root back to vulnerabilities within the software. Attackers were able to gain easy access to it and began exploiting it in January, hence the first incident. Whatever the case it may be, Microsoft will keep a close eye on their software and hopefully ensure that their software is well secured in the future.
