CNN reports that hall of famer Ryne Sandberg is undergoing treatment for his recent metastatic prostate cancer diagnosis. Sandberg has had a phenomenal career, playing 16 seasons in the Major League, winning nine straight Gold Gloves and being named an All-Star for 10 consecutive seasons.
In 1981, Sandberg was drafted out of high school and recruited by the Philadelphia Phillies. He played one season before getting traded to the Chicago Cubs, where he made the decision to remain on the team for the rest of his career. Sandberg has a career high of 123 consecutive errorless games by a second baseman and a record for the most home runs made by a second baseman at 282, five of them being hit when he wasn’t yet a second baseman, says CNN.
In an Instagram post, the Cubs wrote “Ryne, we’re sending love, strength and support your way,” according to CNN. In 2005, Sandberg was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, writes ESPN. A woman by the name of Jane Forbes Clark, who is the leader of the Board of Directors at the National Hall of Fame Museum, stated “his wonderful family [is] in our thoughts.” The Cubs are scheduled to erect a statue of Sandberg on June 23, the 40th anniversary of his best game with the team.
Sandberg is doing well and is still undergoing treatment. Hopefully he will make a full recovery.
