Spirit Week is an enjoyable way for students to dress creatively. Horizon Honors offers four weeks every school year to let students wear “spirited” attire. However, restrictions on clothing hinder students from taking advantage of their freedom for a week. Also, many students are not hugely fond of some of the Spirit Week days that have been picked out. For instance, one of the Spirit Week days last quarter was animal print day. There was a very small amount of middle and high school boys at Horizon Honors who owned an animal print shirt. Spirit Week days should be more appealing to all of the students at Horizon Honors. The themes should be a little more creative and extensive. Student Council should allow more variation with the Spirit Week days so that students will actually participate.  Even though there are students who disagree with some of the Spirit Week days, there have been many days students have enjoyed.For example, Tuesday was twin day; I personally think this was one of the most creative Spirit Week days so far this school year. Eighth grader Alexa Marshall dressed like a twin with two of her friends and said, “I got to wear my sweats, and it was fun to see my twins all day.”

These five days can be filled with fun and excitement only if a student decides to stay in the certain Spirit Week/school dress code. Marshall also says, “I think they should be looser with the dress code.”  So far this week, I have seen plenty of middle schoolers being dress coded, and I feel like this is absolutely ridiculous. This is almost ruining students’ freedom of having the ability to wear their comfortable clothes to school for these five days. Spirit Week only happens once a quarter, and it would be nice if students could wear out of dress code clothes that are still appropriate. To make it all fair, students should wear half and half clothing. For example, if it is Disney day again, a student could wear a Disney shirt with sweats. This makes it fair, because they are participating in Spirit Week and also wearing appropriate attire. I believe students should be allowed to wear clothes that are out of dress code as long as they are not inappropriate. Students should be given freedom, instead of restriction. A great way to resolve this is by encouraging student council to open up to opinions and ideas from students for Spirit Week; then, the students should vote.
