The 2025 Baseball season has been set into motion, and the favored teams like the Dodgers and Phillies have been meeting expectations and are doing great. However, the Rockies are having a historical season, and not in a good way. The Rockies are currently having the worst season in history, starting off the season going 0-21. They are projected to finish off the season going 59-103.
The club fired their General Manager in hopes of repairing the team. Their owner, Dick Monfort, called the start of the season “unacceptable” in a press conference, before adding “our fans deserve better and we are capable of that.”
Now at 7-33, they have endured the worst start to a season ever since the Baltimore Orioles did it in 1988. Going even farther than that, the team is comparable even to the 1884 Kansas City Cowboys and the 1876 Cincinnati Reds, who had many of the same horrific issues the Rockies are having now.
On Saturday May 10, 2025, they succumbed to a 21-0 loss against the San Diego Padres at their home stadium. It was their worst shutout loss in history. During that game, Padres pitcher Stephen Kolek made history on just his second MLB start, equalling the record set by Red Ruffing in 1939 and Ed Siever in 1901 for the largest individual shutout by any MLB pitcher. “I’m actually feeling pretty good right now,” Kolek said afterward, as his teammates dumped a cooler of water on him in celebration. “Anything like this is amazing, I’m just grateful” according to CNN.
It could’ve gotten much worse for the Rockies. At the top of the sixth inning, the Padres already had a commanding lead at 20-0, challenging the all time hit record in a single game (34) and the all time run record in a single game (30). Thankfully, they were able to finish better, ending the game at just a 21-0 loss.
The Rockies have been destroyed by injury after injury. They lost their key players, such as 2024 Gold Glove Shortstop Ezquil Tovar and MVP Kris Bryant. Their season has been so suboptimal that they have let more runs earned than scored. The Rockies are set to be the worst team in the 2025 season, however, there are still more games to come to see if they can turn it around.
