It’s been about a decade since Maggie Doyne was named the 2015 CNN hero for caring and teaching children and orphans in Nepal. After gathering up enough money from her babysitting gigs, she bought a plot of land, which has now turned into a “global model for poverty alleviation and development”, according to CNN.
Her organization, BlinkNow Foundation, has become a revolutionary charity. She created a school named Kopila Valley School, which was once a bamboo shack, and now has 1,000 students learning a series of classes. They have facilities, technology, and a diverse range of courses. At Kopila Valley School, the students learn gardening, farming, and preservation classes, along with being provided with nutritious meals.
Her way of getting into the charity business is phenomenal. After high school, Doyne started her work after meeting a young girl in Surkhet, Nepal, who was struggling due to the decades-long war that was persisting.
From starting at rock bottom, she is now caring for 93 children, addressing their needs and supporting them for growth. Doyne stated, “We’ve now raised a generation of children. They are out in the world as architects, engineers, social workers, teachers, and entrepreneurs.”, according to CNN.
The Kopila Valley Children’s Home, which was once a one-story building, has now evolved to a four-story village and is set with a new area to open later this year. Doyne states that her goal is to keep families together, and if that is not possible, she wants to provide protection and love to weak children. The home also has a separate area for girls who have been victims of violence, human trafficking, and trauma; a medical clinic; and a farm for indigenous women and farmers to learn how to farm.
Though these past years have been full of joy, there has been some misery added to it. On December 30, 2015, Doyne’s son, Ravi, died of accidental drowning. At that moment, she believed that progress would be close to impossible. Then, she attended an event in Los Angeles and connected with filmmaker Jeremy Power Regimbal, who specializes in documenting kind acts. After starting to film Doyne’s life, they eventually got married. They now work professionally and personally while raising their children.
According to CNN, “Keep doing what you can, where you are,” she said. “Keep showing up, keep loving, keep going with your acts of kindness. It all matters.”
