Homecoming has been a tradition that brings students together, promoting a sense of school spirit and community. From competitive basketball games to delicious food trucks, this year’s homecoming had fan favorite traditions with their own unique flares, providing a memorable experience.
Homecoming kicked off with a spirit week. From Mathlete vs. Athlete to White Out Day, there was a variety of creative outfits and participation. To finish off the spirit week, students attended a pep rally on Friday, Jan. 31, which started off with a cheer showcase performed by the middle school cheer team. Horizon athletes were then recognized for their hard work and accomplishments. School spirit was also put to the test with the signature “Spirit Stick” contest, and afterwards, students got to enjoy watching their grade representatives participating in games, where the cheer team rated their attempts at various acrobatics on a scale of ten .
In addition, Horizon’s Basketball teams played their Varsity Homecoming games. Both were close matches against Arizona Lutheran Academy, with the Eagles winning in the girls’ game with a final score of 30 to 24, and the boys afterwards losing 56 to 44. In between the two games, Horizon’s Homecoming royalty were announced with the crowning ceremony, congratulating the students who were elected by the student body, with Holly Teserio as Homecoming Queen and Jack O’Brien as Homecoming King. Meanwhile, Horizon hosted a tailgate, featuring amazing foods, cornhole, and many other activities. Students and family alike could enjoy tacos from Super Farm or a milkshake from The Yard throughout the night.
The main event of every Homecoming is the dance. The dance was at the Coca-Cola Sundeck, which had a DJ, as well as free refreshments and cake. Students crowded the dance floor for all four hours, during which students were able to dance and have fun with their friends.
While homecoming might be over, there are still many Horizon festivities to look forward to, such as the Relay For Life, which supports anyone affected by cancer, as well as Prom for juniors and seniors.
