Two teams faced each other in the college football championship, both undefeated and both hungry for the title of champion. However, one team would leave in shame while the other basked in glory. The Washington Huskies played poorly in the game. At the line of scrimmage there were many instances where there were wide open spaces in the Washington line allowing massive yardage for Michigan. The Michigan Wolverines were the dominant team. With a massive lead in the first quarter, Michigan walked all over the Huskies.
Michigan dominated in every sector including defense, offense, and special teams. The Wolverines beat Washington by 21 points. The final score was Michigan 34 and Washington 13. Donavan Edwards, the running back for Michigan, played outstandingly by watching the field and taking opportunities when they presented themselves. He weaved through gaps in the line of skirmish gaining massive yardage. According to ESPN, “Edwards and Corum had 21 carries a total of 134 yards and 2 touchdowns.” He had his head in the game and it paid off with a massive win for the Wolverines.
The major fault of the Huskies was stated by MSN with “Penix returned for a sixth season to try and help the Huskies to a title, but the Heisman Trophy runner-up’s performance wasn’t enough to overcome a terrible start by his team’s defense.” Washington’s defense has always been the area where they struggled. In the previous game against Texas, Washington only won because of a pass being knocked away and limited time on the clock.
Michel Penix Jr. has had his last season. USA Today says, “While Penix has not formally declared for the 2024 NFL Draft, he will no longer have eligibility at the National Collegiate Athletic Association level and is widely assumed to join this year’s class of draftable quarterbacks.” It is likely that this young player will be moving on to the professional league in the near future.
Washington will now have to look for a quarterback for next season and Michigan will have to work hard if they want to keep the title. Michigan will have to keep up their defensive game and offensive game and use their best players to exploit opportunities to score and gain yards.
