Basketball players that are returning to Horizon Honors next year have something to look forward to this summer. The coaches are organizing skill clinics and boot camps to keep the athletes in shape while not playing their regular season. The skill clinics have already begun but will continue throughout the months of June and July, along with the boot camps. These camps are a great way for athletes to play basketball over summer and stay in shape.

Boot camps are mainly focused on fitness and staying in shape. Athletes in the boot camp should expect to participate in workouts such as sprints, weights, leg workouts, and jump ropes. The dates of the boot camps are June 23 through June 27. The camp times for boys and girls entering fifth-eighth grade is 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. The time for boys and girls entering ninth-twelfth grade is from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The cost is $50 per camper. Emily Rush will be in eleventh grade next year and has previously attended boot camps. She commented, “The boot camps are tough but I recommend going.”

Skill Clinics focus on scrimmaging and skills such as ball handling, shooting, and passing. The cost to attend these clinics is only one canned donation. Seventh through twelfth graders can attend these clinics. Seventh grader, Pilar Rivera, has attended a skill clinic multiple times this year. Rivera stated, “The clinics are fun and we get to scrimmage a lot.” The dates for skill clinics are May 22, 24, 28, 29 and June 10, 12, 17, and 19. For more information contact Coach Shand or visit www.horizonclc.org.

The clinics and camps are very helpful for athletes. Athletes have the opportunity to get to know their teammates they will play with next year. The upcoming high school athletes can start memorizing plays they will be running next year. Overall, it is a great opportunity for athletes to participate in.
