The Horizon Honors varsity boys’ soccer team played rival Valley Christian on Wednesday, Jan. 27, which was also senior night for the team. Tons of parents and students showed up at Pecos Park to support their Eagles in what was a spectacular all-around showing by the team. Valley Christian did not have an answer to the Eagles’ high-powered offensive attack, and the Trojans couldn’t muster a goal.
Horizon Honors wasted no time gaining a lead, and definitely showed up to play. Senior Josh Drapkin scored the first goal of the game, and sophomore Ryan Holguin scored another goal soon after, making the score 2-0. Valley Christian struggled to move the ball on offense, and were unable to answer back with a goal of their own. Junior Loren Ferguson scored a goal of his own before the first half ended, and the Eagles now had a large 3-0 advantage.
The Eagles came back out for the second half and didn’t let up. Freshman Garrett Armstrong and senior Zach Asato continued to play solid defense, and stopped the Trojans’ offense before they could even get anything going. Junior Spencer Brown broke the game open with a goal, giving the Eagles a safe 4-0 cushion. Junior Alex Weixler added yet another goal to Horizon Honors’ total, and time expired with the Eagles ahead 5-0.
It was all cheers and smiles after the game, as the team celebrated seniors Joseph Holguin, Micah Sheveland, Josh Drapkin, and Zach Asato. The four seniors received gifts from their teammates, and got to finish their last regular season game with a win against a rival opponent. With Wednesday’s win in the books, the team has qualified for the state tournament, finishing the regular season with a 10-6 record. Armstrong is excited for the upcoming playoffs. “It meant a lot to beat Valley Christian on Senior Night, and I can’t wait to find out who we play next,” said Armstrong. Be sure to support your Eagles as they prepare for state and look to bring home a title!
