Matt’s Big Breakfast offers breakfast and lunch dishes that are all organic, freshly made, and most importantly, delicious. Located on the corner of 1st Street and Garfield in Downtown Phoenix, the restaurant is a little far for most Horizon Honors students, but is well worth the trip. The small establishment has grown in popularity over the past year after appearing on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

I visited Matt’s with my family over the weekend after seeing impressive online reviews of the food. From the minute we arrived, I could smell pancakes and bacon wafting through the air. The restaurant is very popular, so if you go on the weekend, expect a wait. We arrived a little after 11 a.m. and had to wait about 30 minutes before we were seated because it was so crowded. However, we ended up sitting in a small private room on the side of the main dining area.

I had high expectations for the food, especially since I had been waiting outside in the triple digit weather for so long, and Matt’s definitely exceeded my expectations. I ordered the waffles (which I ate all of), and they were moist, fluffy and very tasty. They were served with maple syrup and extremely thick, peppered bacon which complemented the waffles perfectly.

Our waitress shared that they are known for their pancakes, fresh eggs and pork products. However, my brother ordered a burger which smelled delicious.

The prices are a little more expensive than the average breakfast, but the quality of the food is very high. Keep Matt’s in mind if you’re Downtown and looking for a satisfying meal.
