Dua Lipa is a pop star from Great Britain, who has been in the spotlight since 2015, and remains relevant to today. BBC states that Dua Lipa is suing Samsung for $15 million because of an alleged use of her image on Samsung’s television box. Samsung denies these claims, and says a third party was involved, and that permission for use was explicitly “secured”. Conflicting that, The New York Times says that Lipa’s lawyer said that Samsung did not receive any sort of permission to use it.
The lawsuit was filed in the central district of California. The allegations include copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and misappropriation of Lipa’s likeness and image. According to BBC, the lawsuit stated that Lipa was first aware of her image on Samsung boxes in June 2025, but it wasn’t until recently that people online started dubbing the box the “Dua Lipa TV Box”. Some people even said they would just buy the TV only because it had Dua Lipa on it. The photo on the boxes were taken backstage at a music festival in Austin, Texas in 2024.
The lawyers argued that the revenue generated by the TV was heavily conveyed by the image likeness of Dua Lipa. Samsung is now saying that they had no intention of purposefully using an unauthorized image of Lipa.
As of now, there has been no conclusivity of any allegations, and damages have not been compensated for.
