Nancy Guthrie was presumed to be taken from her home on Jan. 31, 2026. N. Guthrie is a mother of three children, Savannah Guthrie, Annie Guthrie, and Camron Guthrie. There has been much speculation as to who, and why N. Guthrie was taken. Guthrie’s family is quite the journalistic one, her youngest child, S. Guthrie, is an NBC anchor for the “Today Show”, and N. Guthrie herself has appeared on the show multiple times.
A ransom note was issued stating that the abductor wanted six-million dollars by Feb. 9, 2026 for N. Guthrie. Not many suspects have been announced. At one point, A. Guthrie’s husband was a suspect, because he was actually the last person to see her before her disappearance. According to NBC News, the video is centered around a mysterious figure wearing a ski mask and a stuffed, reflective backpack. The FBI has recently released an update to the public saying that they have found the exact model of the backpack. The figure was seen using flowers from N. Guthrie’s garden to disable the camera near the time N. Guthrie was reported missing. Authorities detained a suspect that could possibly be involved or even the person in the security footage outside of N. Guthrie’s house, but was released just hours later. The FBI made an incentive to turn in any valuable information to the government, as of Feb. 12 it was $50,000, but the next day it was doubled to $100,000.
According to NBC, multiple leather gloves have been found just miles away from Guthrie’s house, matching the gloves in the doorbell footage, but only one had DNA attached to it. As of now, there is no DNA match.
The amount of time authorities have spent looking for N. Guthrie is astonishing, and more than 20 days is a long time to go without vital resources elderly people might need to survive. This could be a reason why the N. Guthrie’s family is asking for proof of life before the ransom money is given.
However, what makes this difficult is that these days anybody can create anAI video of somebody speaking or moving. All somebody really needs to make these high quality fakes is for them to say a couple of words and some images. This only used to be a problem for celebrities, but now anyone can do this in their house in seconds. Some ways AI fakes can be spotted are if there are inconsistencies with backgrounds. Making a longer video can give the AI more time to make mistakes, even small ones for frames at a time. That’s why typical proof of life videos are now expected to be longer in length.
As this case keeps developing, it is always important to realize the significance of staying safe when alone. Locked, surveilled homes could be the difference between life, and death.
