The sequel to the 2012 action-adventure, The Hunger Games, hit theaters Nov. 22, 2013 with an advanced screening shown at 8 p.m. on Nov. 21. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” opened with great success, making more than $158.1 billion its first week. The story continues from The Hunger Games, following female protagonist Katniss Everdeen. Jennifer Lawrence plays Everdeen, and is joined by a familiar cast including Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, and Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne. Along with the original Hunger Games cast, new characters and actors are introduced to the story line. Sam Claflin plays Finnick Odair, a victor of a previous Hunger Game who eventually teams up with Everdeen and Mellark in the arena.

The film opens as Everdeen had returns home after winning the 74th annual Hunger Games. Her and fellow tribute, Peeta Mellark, are still pretending to be romantically involved. Because they are the most recent victors, the two must go on a “Victor’s Tour” and visit all of the districts. As the tour continues, rebellions against the Capitol become increasingly common. President Snow plans for the 75th annual Hunger Games, but with a twist that leaves the districts and audience alike, in shock.

Catching Fire was based off of the second novel in the series, The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins. The movie matched well with the book, and the directors and producers did an excellent job of bringing the story to life.

The combination of experienced actors and an interesting plot line make for a thrilling theater experience. Catching Fire was not only a great success financially, but fans of the series were excited about the accuracy of the film as a whole. I am sure that those who have yet to see it will not be disappointed by the highly anticipated continuation of The Hunger Games.
