Promposal Ruined By An Unplanned Crash

A biker and a Porsche collided when the Porsche driver had the idea to pretend to be pulled over for his promposal.

At Arizona College Prep High School, senior William Vannasap became seriously injured when another student sped through a stop sign with his girlfriend in the car as a prank for his promposal. In the aftermath of the accident, Vannasap prepares to file a lawsuit against both the school district and the city for not taking action.

Last April, Vannasap was leaving school for the day on his motorcycle, when another student driving a Porsche sped through an intersection’s stop sign and crashed into him. Vannasap suffered multiple injuries, and according to his attorney, April Speelmon, some of them will remain with him for the rest of his life. The driver of the Porsche had planned to ask his girlfriend to prom by purposefully speeding past a stop sign and getting pulled over by the waiting school resource officer (SRO). While making it look like the student was in trouble, he planned to pull out a poster and ask her to the dance.

The court paperwork claims that the SRO wasn’t aware the student would speed through the stop sign. The officer claimed he thought it would be a “slow roll”. Speelmon says that the student driver was going faster than 40 miles per hour when the crash happened. The school principal also said he was not aware of the plan. He claimed the reason why he was in the car with the SRO was to discuss an unrelated matter. The student driver told Speelmon that he discussed the promposal plan with the SRO and school administration, and they agreed to it.

Speelmon is asking for one million dollars from Chandler Unified School District, the City of Chandler, the SRO and school principal. The potential lawsuit does not go after the teen driver, but Speelmon said they are currently working on a separate claim against him. The student was also not ticketed for the crash. The Chandler Police Department said that the crash happened on private property and was an accident, so the state traffic laws did not incriminate him.

While the student is not facing severe consequences, this unfortunate situation demonstrates the importance of cautious planning, especially as Prom season approaches. Students should be diligent, aware, and careful of the risks in performing dangerous stunts such as this so that future incidents can be avoided.
