President Donald Trump publicly pushed for the U.S. to take control over Greenland, stating that it is important for U.S. national security. He specifically said, according to CNN, “it must be under U.S. control for the security of both the United States and the world”. European leaders are strongly opposed to this and warn of the damage it can cause.
According to CNN, Foreign leaders stood up against him and spoke about standing together to resist his threats. There was even talk about the possibility of impeachment if Trump invaded Greenland. According to CNN, of this possible impeachment conversation, Trump has stated that he will not use force to take over Greenland, reminding us that he can, but he won’t. Trump backed off using military force and his threat took a significant turn.
Trump texted Norway’s Prime Minister and said “Considering your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped eight wars plus, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of peace, although it will always be predominate, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America”. This poses the question if this threat to invade has anything to do with the Nobel Peace Prize or if it is Trump’s desire to use threats and power to gain control.
In conclusion, it will become apparent how the relationship between the two countries changes in the future after these events.
