Luigi Mangione has been accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City back in Dec. 2024. According to BBC, a new scheduled trial will decide if Luigi Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty to the murder, should seek the death penalty.
On Dec. 4, 2024, Thompson was walking toward the New York Hilton midtown, when a suspect, later identified as Mangione, pointed his gun before shooting Thompson, who died at the scene.
Five days later, Mangione was arrested in a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Authorities charged him with Thompson’s murder in a Manhattan court.
Mangione’s lawyers have claimed that the backpack was searched without a warrant, meanwhile prosecutors claim the police were following protocol to search the backpack.
In Mangione’s backpack, there was a 3D-printed gun and suppressor and a fake driver’s license Mangione used to avoid capture. The authorities also found a 262-document page explaining his motive and mindset.
The following is an excerpt from this document, provided by The New York Times :
“To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone. This was fairly trivial: some elementary social engineering, basic CAD, a lot of patience. The spiral notebook, if present, has some straggling notes and To Do lists that illuminate the gist of it. My tech is pretty locked down because I work in engineering so probably not much info there. I do apologize for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming. A reminder: the US has the #1 most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet we rank roughly #42 in life expectancy. United is the [indecipherable] largest company in the US by market cap, behind only Apple, Google, Walmart. It has grown and grown, but as our life expectancy? No, the reality is, these [indecipherable] have simply gotten too powerful, and they continue to abuse our country for immense profit because the American public has allowed them to get away with it. Obviously the problem is more complex, but I do not have space, and frankly I do not pretend to be the most qualified person to lay out the full argument. But many have illuminated the corruption and greed decades ago and the problems simply remain. It is not an issue of awareness at this point, but clearly power games at play. Evidently I am the first to face it with such brutal honesty.”
The BBC reports that Attorney General Pam Bondi is seeking the death penalty in this case, so the jury is weighing the request. If it was granted, the trial would begin on Jan. 11, 2027, but the opening statements would begin on Oct. 13, 2026.
According to the BBC, Mangione faces severe felony murder charges, a second degree murder charge, and weapon and felony charges. Mangione, regardless, has pleaded innocence to the state and federal murder changes.
