NHS members ran a water station at Mile 21 during the PF Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon on Sunday, Jan 19. The group has participated in the race for the past three years and the committee in charge was so impressed by the students’ commitment that they trusted Horizon Honors’ to organize and take care of the entire water station.

Students arrived at the venue at 7am and started setting up tables for water and Gatorade for the thousands of runners. The cold weather and icy water didn’t deter them- even with frozen hands and toes, members continued to pour over 8,000 cups of water. After setup was complete, students gathered for a team meeting and refreshed themselves with donuts.

Runners began arriving around 10am and were greeted by enthusiastic students who shared words of encouragement and water. “It was an inspiration to see so many runners,” said junior Abbey Fitzgerald.

The marathon benefited the Multiple Sclerosis Society, especially children with emerging symptoms of MS. “I really like serving people with my friends,” said Fitzgerald, who looks forward to volunteering at the event next year. NHS volunteers at a number of races throughout the year; the next will be Pat’s Run on April 24.

NHS Advisor Charles McLaughlin shared, “I’m always impressed with the willingness of NHS members to give up their time for good causes.”
