Marathons are a 26.2 mile (42.2 kilometers) race, requiring one of the strongest minds and bodies in all of sports. People who excel at distance running have mastered the mindgames involved and can run the race at incredible speeds. Someone who has mastered the mind like no other is Sabastion Sawe from Kenya, who recently beat the marathon world record time by over one whole minute at the London Marathon. According to AP News, Sawe ran a time of one hour and 59 minutes, completely shattering the two hour threshold by 30 seconds.
Besides Sawe, there was another star at the London marathon that day-his name was Yomif Kejelcha from Ethiopia, who also ran the marathon in under two hours. Kejelcha had never ran the marathon before this race, yet still achieved this long sought-after goal. According to the New York Times, Kejelcha finished the race just eleven seconds behind Sawe.
Strength and willpower are not the only things that dictate if someone does good in races, there are also conditions. The New York Times stated the two hour threshold has been broken before, but the conditions of the race were illegal according to official marathon rules. The conditions of the London Marathon were perfectly legal making the sub two hour time the first valid time in history.
The marathoning community can expect to see these two world class runners in the near future, as they keep impacting the community in great ways.
