In the past, most artifacts were most commonly stored in ancient tombs and other old monuments like the Pyramids. In Egypt, artifacts are considered owned by the country itself, so taking the artifacts out of the country is a surprise unless bought at a really high price. However, this all changed on Nov. 4, 2025 when the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) officially opened to the public. Quickly, the colossal museum shadowed all other attempts of displaying Egyptian artifacts, culture, and history. After 20 years of work, the museum is now home to just around 100,000 Egyptian artifacts, its doors open to the public. In 2024, the museum was opened to some for a preview before it was finished.
According to Artnet, the GEM holds thousands of artifacts, including riches from King Tutankhamun’s tomb and the statue of King Ramses II. BBC stated, the greatest effect of the museum is the boost of tourism. While most of the museum was opened to the public last year, the new exhibit is predicted to boost tourist numbers to eight million per year.
The GEM holds an insurmountable 100,000 artifacts, making it the largest archaeological museum in the world. The entire museum is approximately 500,000 square meters, making it one of the largest museums in the world. The Grand Staircase is a spiral staircase with 9 statues lining the left side. The huge size will allow visitors to explore new parts of the museum over multiple visits, keeping their interest, and giving a reason for the lengthy construction time.
