In late 2023, the sphere in Las Vegas opened to the public for the first time. The one-of-a-king venue brought tons of revenue for hosting movies, events, and concerts Overall, the sphere boosted Las Vegas’ economy in many ways. Maryland isn’t that popular in terms of tourism, according to Vistmaryland, in 2024 tourists brought in around $21.2 billion for their economy. Vegas, in comparison, grossed around $41 billion . A business venture like the sphere could see immense economic growth for the state.
Sphere Entertainment, the company responsible for the spheres, said, “Sphere is a new experiential medium. With a commitment to bringing innovative opportunities to residents and visitors” according to WTOP. As Sphere Entertainment said, large scale entertainment ventures could drastically increase economic growth for a state. With that, if there is a large amount of spheres across America in the future, newer bands and artists could host shows at these venues and boost viewership to themselves. Spheres aren’t necessarily a win-win situation; there are a lot of downsides to them too. First, they are very expensive.
According to MusicTech, the Sphere in Las Vegas cost around $2.3 Billion to build. They are built with thousands of LED screens causing a lot of light pollution; TCD states “Light pollution is more disruptive than many people realize. Anyone who lives near the sphere has to deal with the consistent bright lights, which can be harsh, frustrating, and bad for human health. Depending on how long the orb is on, which varies based on events and seasons, it can also interrupt people’s sleep schedules and circadian rhythms. Nocturnal light also makes it impossible to appreciate the natural night sky.”
Overall, Maryland’s venture into a sphere like Vagas’s could lead to a better economy for the state itself. Along with that if more spheres start popping up it could boost a ton of revenue for all.
