When people think of robots in the present, many see a mix of good and bad potential in them. Some see them in the future helping society advance with tasks, improving technology, and making a clean future. Others see danger in them and could eventually be used as weapons. However, an old film from 1897 predicts what they could become in the future.
“Gugusse And The Automaton” is a short silent film directed by Georges Méliès that lasts 1 minute. According to the Library Of Congress, the film was rediscovered in early 2026. The library had carefully examined and went through the film reel to discover what was inside.
When Gugusse And The Automaton had gone through examination, researchers discovered a unique short film with an interesting story. In the film, it showed what looked like a magician building a robot named “Pierrot Automate” that had eventually turned against him and attacked. The film shows the robot being cranked in a box growing bigger to an adult until it attacks the man. The man then hits it with a mallet making the robot grow smaller until it vanishes.
Many had just seen the film as a comedic joke, but most suggest a hidden meaning showing a prediction of the future. Allegedly, some had seen this film representing how technology could evolve in the future and will turn against all humans.
National Today states “Gugusse And The Automaton” was a prediction of what robots of today could act like. Moving image curator Jason Evans Groth says “the film represents probably the first instance of a robot ever captured in a moving image,” according to NPR.
According to Gizmodo, the film presents a potential message warning people if society isn’t careful about technology, they could start to act on their own and rebel against humans
Technicians are still currently progressing on finding the film’s true meaning.
However, this film is a huge message on how the media can show potential danger in society and make many realize what can be created could eventually lead to our demise.
