Starting Saturday, March 28, Indonesia will ban people under 16 from using social media platforms like TikTok, Youtube, Facebook, and Snapchat. This comes four months after the Australian government banned the use of social media for kids under 16 in December of 2025.
This ban will make Indonesia the second country to ban social media for children. However, this ban is unique in that it is also targeting the widely used gaming platform, Roblox, which wasn’t included in Australia’s ban.
Nepal was one of two countries that banned social media in 2025, however, they lifted the ban due to protests that killed 19 people and set fire to the parliament building. Nepal’s ban targeted 26 platforms, including apps like Facebook and Youtube.
According to the BBC, Indonesia’s ban on the game Roblox has led Australia’s critics to demand that gaming platforms like Roblox and Discord be banned as well, since both sites weren’t included in the ban.
The BBC reports that other online sources of pornographic material, including OnlyFans and Pornhub, have also been banned in the country. Indonesia’s child protection agency, meanwhile, said it could not comment on the government’s plans until it had studied them.
Countries like the United Kingdom (UK) and Spain have said they will follow Indonesia and Australia’s lead. The UK held a public consultation to ask people if they should make a similar ban like Indonesia’s.
In the meantime, kids under the age of 16 are allowed to have apps made for kids, like Messenger Kids and YouTube Kids. This ban will likely cause change in the future of how kids use social media.
