Associated Press Bans the Term ‘Illegal Immigrant’

The Associated Press (AP) has made a decision to no longer refer to undocumented immigrants as illegal, as of April 2, 2013. The AP says their goal with this update is to avoid using incorrect labels. “The Stylebook no longer sanctions the term ‘illegal immigrants or the use of ‘illegal’ to describe a person. Instead, it tells users that ‘illegal’ should describe only an action, such as living in or immigrating to a country illegally,”said Kathleen Carroll, Senior Vice President and Executive Editor. Immigrants’ rights activists have been thrilled by the AP’s move and hope that other news organizations take similar action in defining their terminology.
