High school is not just about required classes like math, science, history, and English. It’s about discovering new interests and finding classes that make scholars excited to come to school. Electives give students the chance to try something different, build real-life skills, and explore what they might want to do in the future. When students were asked what the best high school elective is, their answers showed just how much these classes matter.
A poll was given out to all highschoolers and one class stood out more than any other: culinary. Students from every grade level named it as their favorite. They said it is hands-on, fun, and teaches important life skills. In culinary, students learn how to cook, follow recipes, work as a team, and try new foods. Many also mentioned that the teacher, Ms. Heinrich, makes the class enjoyable and supportive. And of course, getting to eat the food you make is a huge bonus.
Freshmen also shared other favorites like choir, theater, digital art, soccer, and journalism. They enjoy classes where they can be creative, active, and make new friends. Sophomores talked about art and personal fitness because those classes help build creativity, confidence, and healthy habits. Some also mentioned psychology for helping them understand how the mind works and manage stress.
Juniors and seniors continued to support culinary, but they also highlighted contemporary visual media (CVM), law in American society, and computer science. CVM lets students watch and analyze movies while learning about film techniques. Law in American society makes legal topics interesting and fun. Computer science stood out because students can learn coding, create video games, and prepare for college-level classes.
Overall, students agreed that the best electives are fun, useful, and taught by teachers who care. While culinary was the most popular choice, the best elective really depends on what each student enjoys and wants to learn. Along with one other thing, free food.
