The Horizon Honors high school girls’ soccer team prepared for their season with a scrimmage against Mingus Union High School on Nov. 19. The team has been practicing together for the past two weeks and attended a training camp in preparation for their season.

The first half of the scrimmage was started with a dynamic kickoff. The team quickly made it down field to attempt a goal, which was blocked by the opposing team’s goalkeepers. Mingus Union High School soon made it down the field with several consecutive passes and scored a goal. Both teams exhibited excellent passing skills as each attempted multiple shots at goal. In the second quarter, Horizon Honors had a good streak down the field, but it was blocked by Mingus defense. By halftime, the score is 2-0 with Horizon Honors down.

The third quarter of the game was full of many penalties on the Horizon Honors team. The girls continued to play a strong defense, but another goal was scored by Mingus Union High School. The Horizon Honors boys team came to the scrimmage after practice to support the girls.

The fourth quarter was mostly back and forth between the two teams. With one more goal by Mingus Union High School, the final score was 4-0.

The game, despite the loss, showed that the Horizon Honors team is going to have a good season. Patrick Andrews, the coach of the team commented, “The game went better than anticipated. The girls competed well and held a school that consistently qualifies for state scoreless for much of the game. This was more impressive given the number of new girls to the program and soccer.” He expects a great season, which he says is thanks to the early practices, soccer camp, and team captains Sam Grayson and Sierra Volker. Horizon Honors will face off against Veritas Preparatory Academy at home on Dec. 3 at 3:45 p.m.
