On April 6th, 2026, the 2026 Men’s March Madness Championship concluded this year’s tournament. The Midwestern, first seed, University of Michigan Wolverines defeated the Eastern, second seed, University of Connecticut (UConn) Huskies by a final score of 69-63, to win their first title in 37 years.
According to ESPN, Michigan had played five games before reaching this stage of the tournament. Their Round of 64 matchup saw them come away with a dominating 101-80 win over Howard. Their matchup against Saint Louis in the Round of 32 resulted in a 95-72 win. They played the University of Alabama in the Sweet 16, and came away with a 90-77 victory. In the Elite Eight, they took down the University of Tennessee in dominating fashion, winning by 3 with a final score of 93-62. In the Final Four, they faced the University of Arizona Wildcats, who were the first seed in the West region, and came out on top with a 91-73 win.
UConn also played five games before reaching this game. They won the Round of 64 game against Furman University with a score of 82-71. Their Round of 32 game resulted in a 73-57 win over the University of California Los Angeles Bruins. In the Sweet 16, they defeated Michigan State University in a close final score of 67-63. Both teams had dealt with injuries to star players coming into this game. Reported by USA Today, Michigan star player Yaxel Lendeborg had suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, as well as an ankle injury in their Final Four matchup against the Wildcats. Huskies player Solo Ball said that he had suffered what was described by UConn coach Dan Hurley as “some type of foot sprain.” Ball was seen on April 5th in a walking boot. Both players were off the injury report for the matchup and were able to play.
The first half started with Michigan gaining momentum early, but the Huskies quickly came back, cutting the Wolverines’ lead to four at halftime, with Michigan leading 33-29. However, when speaking to reporter Tracy Wolfson at halftime, Lendeborg stated “I feel awful right now, I feel super weak right now. I can’t make anything.”
In the second half, Michigan began to pull away again, this time, they made the lead even larger, and made it hard for UConn to catch up. However, the Huskies were not done yet, as they continued their effort to catch up. But foul trouble began to plague them, allowing Michigan to pull away in the game. UConn once again attempted to come back, but was too late, as the clock hit zero, and Michigan won, 69-63.
Another season of college basketball enters the books, and the Wolverines celebrate their championship victory, their first in 37 years.
