For the National Football League (NFL), the price to watch football games has increased a lot throughout the years. Just one month of NFL Sunday Ticket costs $82.99, according to Youtube Help. As a result of these insane prices, the federal government has started to look into the charge for their games.
The NFL is being looked at by the federal government. According to Yahoo!, the Department of Justice (DOJ), are looking at if the NFL is breaking antitrust laws. Mike Lee is a lawyer and a politician, who is in the Republican party, according to Congress. Lee urged the DOJ to look at the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961. The Sports Broadcasting Act allows sports companies to charge a very small amount of money for streaming services. Since in the 60s and 70s there were not many things to watch, sports companies could charge a very small amount. Lee has argued that the NFL has been abusing this law, by charging way more than they should.
The Sports Broadcasting Act lets the NFL sell their broadcasting rights, and they’ve taken advantage of that, as they have a number of subscriptions. The Trump administration has investigated the NFL already and enforced laws such as not allowing NFL players being able to kneel when the national anthem plays.
The DOJ is investigating the NFL for its absurd prices, and both the government and the NFL will most likely make a treaty and a compromise. For NFL fans, they want the league to lower their prices as much as possible so they can watch a lot of football games. The league has already admitted that 90% of its games are for free, but that was also an admission of guilt of breaking the law technically. The case must be solved before the next NFL season begins, which is in September.
