On Friday, Dec. 4, Horizon Honors varsity girls’ basketball team participated in the Phoenix Country Day School (PCDS) Desert Classic, a statewide high school tournament. The team played five games against teams across the state of Arizona, and won the championship with a record of 4-1.

The girls played against Pusch Ridge Christian in their first game, and lost with a close score of 34-27. In the second game, the team found a tough opponent in Arizona Lutheran, but were able to come up victoriously with a 35-32. The Eagles then played Arizona College Prep in their third game and were in total control, winning 38-9. In the semi-final Horizon Honors defeated Phoenix Country Day 42-32. Last was the tournament championship game, where Horizon Honors looked to even the score with Pusch Ridge Christian. Horizon Honors did exactly that, winning 39-38 thanks to senior Sierra Reese’s last-second shot.

For coach Nate Agostini, the team’s championship victory shows that the girls are off to a great start. “It means a lot to the team to get off to a good start this season,” said Mr. Agostini. “This was a really good tournament with some high-quality opponents, and winning it tells us that we can go far this season.” Be sure to support your Lady Eagles in their next game against Valley Lutheran High School on Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
