On Friday, Feb. 19, the Horizon Honors varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball teams competed in the state tournament. Both teams were able to finish out their seasons on a high note as qualifying for state is no easy task.

Both teams started off the tournament’s opening round with victories. The boys came away with a thrilling 48-46 buzzer-beater victory over Mohave, and the girls beat Coolidge 54-37. Unfortunately for the Eagles, both teams drew tough opponents in the next round and ended up on the losing end of the scoreboard. Phoenix Christian eliminated the girls by a score of 56-31, and the boys came up short against Yuma Catholic 50-62.

The girls’ team finished with an impressive 24-7 record, and the boys finished up their season at 19-14. Qualifying for state is definitely a huge step for the boys’ and girls’ basketball programs, and both teams will look to continue to build on what they accomplished this year.
