A man named Julian Navas found a huge 7.46 carat diamond in Diamond State Park on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024 according to CNN. Navas was visiting the United States from France to see the first moon landing mission in decades in Cape Canaveral, Florida. When he was on his way there, he stumbled on Diamond State Park. When he got wind of the existence of this state park, he insisted on going there and looking for some diamonds.
When Navas arrived at the park, he bought his ticket and rented a diamond-hunting kit at 9 a.m. CNN states, Navas explains that “[digging] is back-breaking work, so by the afternoon I was mainly looking on top of the ground for anything that stood out.”
Many of the park’s biggest diamonds lie at the bottom of the soil. Luckily for Navas, it rained a couple of days before he got there, making the soil easier to excavate and sift through. The park periodically plows the 37.5 acre park to promote natural erosion. After looking for diamonds for a couple hours, he had finally found a 7.46 carat brown diamond. He took his findings to the Diamond Discovery Center, reports ABC News.
He called it the Carine Diamon after his fiancé. Navas called the park a “magical place, where the dream of finding a diamond can come true.” Navas said he hoped he could come back to the park with his daughter when she is older.
