Climber Thomas Plamberger has been accused of manslaughter after his girlfriend died on a hike with him. Plemberger pleaded not guilty, claiming he was “going to seek help” whilst his girlfriend, Kerstin Gurtnur, froze to death. Now, he is waiting to be convicted.
The prosecutors, mainly his girlfriend’s family, wanted justice for their daughter. Alongside the manslaughter charge, Plamberger was also convicted of failing to take and send distress signals despite having clear phone service.
During Plamberger’s trial, a second woman, who is allegedly his ex-girlfriend, testified that he also allegedly left her on a mountain in a similar way. His reason that time was that she was “slow” and couldn’t catch up, according to CNN.
According to The New York Times, Plamberger was found guilty and was given a suspended prison sentence, along with other fines. The fines are due to him not sending a distress signal.
In response to this, social media made a trend off of her and the other girls’ abandonment and are calling it “alpine divorce.” People are using this rise in popularity to share their own stories about how they were abandoned. People are saying things like “in a situationship while on a hike” to joke around the topic.
As more stories of alpine abandonment show up, more people will be convicted of abandoning their partners on alpine hikes.
